Why PAT Testing Matters

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is essential for identifying electrical faults before they become serious safety risks. Regular testing helps:

  • Prevent electric shocks and fire hazards

  • Comply with Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

  • Demonstrate your duty of care to staff, tenants, or customers

  • Keep equipment in safe working condition

Insurance Compliance

Many insurance policies require evidence of PAT testing—especially for landlords, offices, hospitality, or construction businesses. Without documented testing, insurers may refuse to pay out if faulty appliances cause injury or fire.

FAQ

Do I legally have to get PAT testing done?

There is no law that says PAT testing must be carried out on a set schedule. However, UK regulations such as the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require all electrical systems to be maintained in a safe condition—and PAT testing is a common, effective way to prove this.

How often should appliances be tested?

It depends on the environment and type of equipment. For example:

  • Office PCs: Every 2–4 years

  • Extension leads & kettles: Annually

  • Construction tools: Every 3 months
We assess your setup and give honest advice based on risk.

How often should I test?

Frequency varies—office equipment might need annual testing, while tools and extension leads used frequently may need quarterly checks

Can I label appliances?

Labels are not required by law, but they’re excellent for management and record-keeping—something we include in your service.

What types of equipment need testing?

Any portable, plug-in device that connects to a mains power supply should be tested—this includes kettles, extension leads, heaters, tools, IT equipment, etc

How long does PAT testing take?

Most appointments are completed within 1–2 hours, depending on how many items are being tested. We offer flexible timing to fit around your schedule.

Do I need to unplug everything?

Where possible, yes—but we’ll work with you on-site to minimise disruption and test safely.

What do I receive after testing?

You'll get:

  • A detailed report of all tested appliances

  • Pass/fail labels (if required)

  • Certificate of testing for your records and insurance
